If you've taken any of our courses, you've heard me say this too many times already, but it's true: "How you practice scales is how you improvise."

A lot of times we only learn our scales in a single shape and assume that we'll be able to create amazing solos and fills but we end up just playing the same things over and over. It's time to change all of that, for good.

In this course I'm going to teach you the advanced scale patterns used by the best improvisers and bass players that I know. These patterns are used by players like Felix Pastorius, Rich Brown, Evan Marien and Mike Bendy to name just a few.

The patterns that I'm going to show you focus on playing 3 notes of the scale on each string. Using this pattern, we'll now be starting our scales on the root, but our scale will extend above the octave of the root note and end on the 5th. This means that if we start these patterns descending, we won't be starting on the root and that's a great thing for our ears to get used to! Overall, I find it much easier to play faster lines with these patterns. The stretch position of these patterns means that we don't have to make as many jumps around the neck to execute solo lines and fills. I also find that these patterns make it much easier to visualize the connections between the different modes of the major scale.
